Sunday Summary - 10.16.22
Nash, Bryan, and I walked to get coffee this weekend, and the flowers outside were too pretty not to capture (or sniff, in Nash’s case!)
Reading & Listening
Thanks to Bookbub I was able to snag this ebook for free. It’s about a murder mystery book club of middle aged friends (I think? I legitimately can’t discern their ages.) who work together to unofficially solve mysteries in their Florida Keys community. The idea is really similar to this popular series, but these are much shorter and a bit sillier. It’s a fun read for this time of year, and there are 5 more books in the series if you like this one.

For all the non-book readers out there, here are a couple of articles and podcasts I enjoyed this week:
Article: Beyond the #Girlboss: Fixing the Motherhood Penalty - Money with Katie has some hot takes in this one that made me laugh out loud. If you work full time in a male dominated field or are feeling the pain of childcare costs, give this one a read.
Podcast: Elizabeth the First - This documentary style podcast narrated by Katy Perry is about the life of Elizabeth Taylor. Because The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was loosely based on Elizabeth Taylor and Rita Ora, I was intrigued by this one. New episodes release every Monday.
Cooking
Hold onto your hats, folks. This week I’m challenging myself to cook from a site OTHER than Half Baked Harvest. After working on the Sunday Spotlight series I was inspired by both Mary Kat and Maggie to see what Gaby has to offer.
Chicken Gyro Fries or Chicken Shawarma Bowls — can’t decide!
Sweet Potato, Kale, and Black Bean Enchiladas — we need to use up leftover kale from Smoky Potato & Kale Soup last week.
This broccolini side dish is calling my name, but I’ll need to figure out what to pair it with.
This recipe actually comes from a blog called Belle of the Kitchen, not What’s Gaby Cooking, but Bryan specifically requested Instant Pot Loaded Potato soup. My mom discovered it years ago, and it instantly became a family favorite. (See what I did there?)
Watching
A movie theater in our area sells $6 movie tickets on Tuesdays, so we saw Amsterdam, featuring Margot Robbie, John David Washington, and Christian Bale, with Ashley and Jordan this week. It was a pretty interesting movie about 3 friends who meet in the midst of World War I and work together to unfurl a shady business plot (I don’t want to give away too many spoilers!)
Toward the end they have you questioning whether or not it’s based on a true story and, according to this article and this article, elements of the story are true but it’s mostly fiction. (They never claim it’s based on a true story, to be clear, we were all just curious after the scene that accompanies the end credits.)
Beyond that movie I didn’t watch any TV shows or movies that we haven’t already discussed, but I was VERY excited when I ran across this Spirited trailer earlier this week! You can see it on Apple+ on November 18th.
Weekly Favorites & Restocks
ORGANIZATION
Wire Garage Shelving
Very utilitarian, I know — Bryan and I spent a majority of our Saturday cleaning out and organizing our garage, and we’re quite proud of how it looks! We’ve been using hand-me-down plastic shelves that were weighted down and warped. After much research, Bryan opted for these wire shelves that hold up to 850 pounds. We were really impressed with the quality!
FASHION
Double Loop Earrings
This is a unique take on the popular “huggie” earring style. I love that you get the huggie and hoop look all in one, and they’re really simple to put in with a basic post back. Hot tip: Add these to your cart and wait a day or so, so they’ll email you a 20% off coupon. Rakuten is running 3% cash back right now, too!
BEAUTY
Paula’s Choice Skincare
I recently ran out of my Vitamin C + Caffeine serum from YTTP, and while I love it, I wanted to seek out something a little less expensive. PC was having 20% off their entire site, so I ordered their 15% Vitamin C serum, this toner for some added moisture and anti-aging ingredients for the winter, and my favorite tinted SPF that I also recently used up.
