2022 Book Review: Awards, Ratings, and Summaries

It’s here! My favorite summary of the year! Last year I set things up a bit differently — I wrote 1-2 word thoughts about each book I read and identified the Top 5 books of the year. Hindsight is 20/20, and I realize now that probably didn’t give you a good feel for what the books were actually about. So I’m stepping things up this year, and I hope you enjoy!

Note: All book descriptions are excerpts from Goodreads or directly from the back of each book (with edits by moi, because I don’t like when big twists are included in the book descriptions!) Also, if you buy a book through one of the links below, I may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Genres - Fiction | Romantic Comedy | Adventure

River Lane's acting career is tanking fast. Determined to start a new career behind the camera, she'll will take whatever job she can get, including filming a documentary about the picturesque town of Moose Springs. The last thing he expects is to interrupt a film shoot and earn River's wrath. But Easton has an idea to make it up to her: he can take River's crew up the local hidden gem, Mount Veil.

Maggie Note: This is the third book in the Moose Springs series. While t’s not totally necessary for you to have read the first two to understand the storyline of this one, characters and references to prior books will make a lot more sense if you read them in order. They’re quick reads, and the second one is set at Christmastime, if you want to add it to your holiday reading list!

FREDRIK BACKMAN

Anxious People - 5 Stars

Genres - Contemporary Fiction | Mystery | Humor

Looking at real estate isn't usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises, these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in a motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next.

Maggie Note: I almost didn’t read this book because I didn’t love A Man Called Ove, one of Backman’s most famous books. I’m glad I gave this one a shot, because I really loved this story! It made me laugh, cry, and think.

NICK MAGGIULLI

Genres - Non-Fiction | Personal Finance | Economics

Everyone faces big questions when it comes to money: questions about saving, investing, and whether you’re getting it right with your finances. Unfortunately, many of the answers provided by the financial industry have been based on belief and conjecture rather than data and evidence—until now. In Just Keep Buying, hugely popular finance blogger Nick Maggiulli crunches the numbers to answer the biggest questions in personal finance and investing, while providing you with proven ways to build your wealth right away. You will learn why you need to save less than you think, why saving up cash to buy market dips isn’t a good idea, how to survive (and thrive) during a market crash, and much more.

It’s also organized wonderfully and can be read cover to cover or used as a reference book. I’ve recommended this book to all of my friends and encourage you to pick it up, too!

JESSE Q. SUTANTO

Four Aunties and a Wedding - 2 Stars

Genres - Fiction | Mystery | Romance

Meddy Chan has been to countless weddings, but she never imagined how her own would turn out. Now the day has arrived, and she can't wait to marry her college sweetheart, Nathan. Instead of having Ma and the aunts cater her wedding, Meddy wants them to enjoy the day as guests, so they find the perfect wedding vendors: a Chinese-Indonesian family-run company just like theirs. Meddy realizes that is where their similarities end, however, when she overhears one of them talking about taking out a target. Her aunties and mother won't let Meddy's wedding ceremony become a murder scene and will do whatever it takes to save her special day, even if it means taking on the mafia.

Maggie Note: This is the second book in the Four Aunties series. I ended up skimming the last several chapters, because the plotline was so stressful and rather unbelievable. The author has confirmed a 3rd book, but I will probably skip that one.

MALCOLM HARRIS

Kids These Days: Human Capital and the Making of Millennials - 3 Stars

Genres - Nonfiction | Sociology | Psychology | Economics | Politics

Everyone knows "what's wrong with Millennials." Glenn Beck says we've been ruined by "participation trophies." Simon Sinek says we have low self-esteem. This Millennial is here to prove them all wrong. Millennials have been stereotyped as lazy, entitled, narcissistic, and immature. We've gotten so used to sloppy generational analysis filled with dumb clichés about young people that we've lost sight of what really unites Millennials. Kids These Days, is about why. In brilliant, crackling prose, early Wall Street occupier Malcolm Harris gets mercilessly real about our maligned birth cohort. Examining trends like runaway student debt, the rise of the intern, mass incarceration, social media, and more. Harris gives us a portrait of what it means to be young in America today that will wake you up and piss you off.

Maggie Note: This book provided some fantastic insights into “why I am the way that I am” in some respects; however, it’s kind of depressing. The author doesn’t exactly leave you feeling hopeful about our future, and I refuse to believe we live in a world with no hope for change. SO go into it knowing he won’t offer much in the way of solutions, but his insights are interesting! That’s why this book got a 3 star review.
